Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul is advertising for a new equity and “wellness champion” who will make between $87,360 to $99,632 a year as the law enforcement mission of his office continues to deteriorate.
“This position is eligible to work remotely!” the job description notes.
On Aug. 9, Republican Attorney General candidate Eric Toney slammed Kaul for “turning his back” on law enforcement in his victory speech this week. Toney, the Fond du Lac County district attorney, accused Kaul of defunding the prosecutorial and law enforcement mission of DOJ.
He noted that the Department of Justice had only 88 of 113 Division of Criminal Investigation positions filled earlier this year. “Josh Kaul made a choice, a decision not to fill those positions, when we’ve had historic violence,” Toney said. We asked Kaul’s office for current vacancy positions and they did not even bother to respond.
Toney is getting his numbers from an official in Kaul’s own office who revealed them at a Badger State Sheriff’s Conference. She said more agents are expected to leave DCI in the next few months, according to Toney, who added that Kaul “has also left key prosecutor positions vacant at the DOJ, reducing resources for District Attorneys and cops across Wisconsin.”
The media have shown zero interest in scrutinizing this angle.
In the midst of all of that, we noticed that Josh Kaul was pushing the equity and “wellness champion” job on Twitter on the same day that Toney won the primary and spoke about Kaul taking his eye off the ball.
“The Wisconsin Department of Justice is #hiring a Human Resources Program Officer. This is a challenging leadership role supporting areas of recruitment, classification, compensation, employment relations, and performance,” wrote Kaul.
Furthermore, this position serves as the Equity and Inclusion Officer, Wellness Champion, and EAP Coordinator for the organization.

We are all for workplace wellness, but not when Kaul is doing so at the same time he’s not prioritizing the public safety mission of DOJ. Public safety is COMMUNITY wellness.
The job description says the position’s duties include: “Developing strategy and driving process improvements regarding diversity and inclusion, wellness, and/or EAP (employee assistant program) issues in the workplace.”
The job description also notes, “All state employees must report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not and provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.”
